Physical therapy assistants help patients regain physical abilities, recover independence, and improve their quality of life. They measure patients’ range-of-joint motion, body parts, or vital signs to determine effects of treatments. They will instruct patients in prescribed exercises or assist in therapeutic treatments such as aquatic physical therapy, heat, light, sound, or electrical modality treatments. They will also fit patients for orthopedics, prostheses, or supportive devices such as crutches. Their observations during treatments are reported back to the physical therapist in person or through progress notes.
