Respiratory therapists work as part of a team of physicians and nurses to provide care to patients. Specifically, they set up and operate devices such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatuses, environmental control systems, or aerosol generators. In some cases, respiratory therapists will provide emergency care, such as artificial respiration, external cardiac massage, or assistance with cardiopulmonary resuscitation. At other times, they will provide on-going or therapeutic care such as bronchopulmonary drainage or instructing patients in breathing exercises. At all times they are responsible for safely maintaining respiratory therapy equipment and communicating with the healthcare team to ensure the safety and well-being of the patient.
