teacher pipeline™
The Teacher Pipeline is a collaboration between Austin Interfaith, Austin Independent School District (AISD), Austin Community College (ACC), Capital IDEA, Education Austin, Huston-Tillotson University and St. Edward’s University. These community partners came together and identified the following goals of the Project:
- Address the teacher shortage in Austin by providing AISD paraprofessionals with the opportunity to earn bachelor’s degree and become certified teachers;
- Improve the quality of education for AISD students by providing the district with more certified teachers in K-12 classrooms; and
- Increase the diversity of teachers in the classroom.
Capital IDEA acts as the administrator of the Teacher Pipeline. Once enrolled in the Teacher Pipeline, participants are assessed to determine at what level they need to begin their educational path. Throughout their education (which can last anywhere from two to five years) a Capital IDEA counselor works with each participant to help them succeed. For qualifying participants, tuition, books and childcare costs are covered. Participants continue to work full-time in AISD as paraprofessionals but are given leave time by AISD to attend class.
Participant Qualifications
All Teacher Pipeline Participants must meet the following qualifications to be considered
for sponsorship:
- At least 18 years old
- Currently working in AISD as a paraprofessional
- At or below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines
