Medical Laboratory Technician |
Career Profile
The Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) performs a wide range of routine
laboratory procedures under the limited supervision of a medical technologist.
The MLT is expected to demonstrate a high level of skill in the areas
of phlebotomy, urinalysis, blood-banking, coagulation, chemistry, hematology,
microbiology, parasitology, and serology. Employment opportunities are
available in hospitals, minor emergency centers, doctor's offices, clinics,
blood donor centers, and industry. The MLT may have direct patient contact;
for example, when taking blood samples from patients.
A medical laboratory technologist's typical duties may include monitoring tests and procedures, and preparing blood, urine and tissue specimens for analysis. Using sophisticated laboratory equipment, lab technicians look for bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms; analyze the chemical content of fluids; match blood for transfusions; and test for drug levels in the blood to show how a patient is responding to treatment. Technologists may specialize in the areas of chemistry, hematology, cytotechnology, immunology, virology, blood banking and microbiology. Due to the critical nature of the work, lab technicians must be extremely accurate.
Medical lab technologists work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, universities, private laboratories, and public health organizations.
In a large medical lab, the Medical Laboratory Technician may be assigned to a specific area. In smaller clinical facilities, he or she may be expected to function in many areas.
