Our Celebration of Graduates on May 2 was a profoundly moving evening. Not only did nearly one hundred 2007 graduates celebrate their academic achievements and new careers, but Alumni from previous classes returned to share powerful stories of professional growth and commitment to others. They are fulfilling the promise that every Capital IDEA participant makes to give back time and energy to the rest of us.
Felicia Reed, sonography graduate from 2002 and the first in her family to go to college, spoke of a chance encounter with a benefactor many years ago. She is now contributing annually at the Stakeholder Society level to the Alumni Sponsor-a-Scholar Fund.
Eloina Serna, LVN graduate of 2003 and RN graduate of 2005, told us how she is helping to design research protocols for the studies of new drugs at PPD. Her eight-year-old son told her that he wanted to be a doctor so he can work with her. |
Justin Tigrett, coding technician from 2002, shared the story of his dual graduation from Capital IDEA and the Del Valle work release program. He spoke movingly about how education turned his life around. He went on to complete a bachelor’s degree at Texas State.
Christopher Nix, surgical technology graduate from 2006, Aurora Alworth awardee of 2007, and President of the Alumni Association, presented this year’s Alworth award to Irene Casillas who graduated from the LVN program in 2003 and then went on to graduate from the RN program in 2007. In addition to her untiring support of her peers in the nursing program, she has now motivated a brother, a sister, and three nieces to enter college.
As you read this, 650 more Felicias, Eloinas, Justins, Chris’s, and Irenes are studying hard and another 600 are in the early stages of their careers and giving back. Thank you for your support to make this possible. Central Texas is a better place for it, and will be even better in the future.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our wonderful sponsors, without whom the Celebration would not have been possible. Thank you to the following generous supporters:
Asista Management Corporation
CyberTex
Gray and Becker
IBEW Local 250
PMG – Your Offsite Personnel Department
Seton Family of Hospitals
St. David’s Healthcare Partnership
Graduate Spotlight: Martha Gutierrez
Martha Gutierrez enrolled in Capital IDEA in the spring of 2000. Since then, she has had ample reasons to abandon her education, but regardless of the obstacles she faced, Martha stayed true to her purpose and in May 2008 she realized her long time dream of becoming a Registered Nurse.

Martha was born in Chihuahua, Mexico - one of nine children. She made it through her first year of high school before having to drop out to go to work. At 18 Martha moved to the United States and found employment as a nanny for families with small children. The language barrier was very frustrating and Martha began to feel an acute need to learn English.
After twelve years of struggling with English on her own, Martha heard about Capital IDEA. Excited about the opportunity, Martha enrolled the following semester in a GED/ESL pilot project held at Austin Academy.
Over the next five years Martha made amazing progress. She finished her GED/ESL coursework and passed all five GED exams. She completed a semester of the College Prep Academy, which enabled her to pass her college entrance exams. She then took four semesters of introductory course work, earning an amazing 3.8 GPA, and was accepted into nursing school. Along the way she also had her third and fourth child.
In the first eight weeks of the nursing program, things started to take a downward turn. The coursework was more difficult than she had anticipated, and family pressures made it hard for Martha to apply herself. When her grades began to drop she reluctantly decided to withdraw. “I could feel I wasn’t ready for the midterms, and my confidence was suffering.”
Determined to do better, Martha reenrolled the following year and committed herself to an exhausting study schedule. Every Saturday and Sunday for the next two years, Martha was in the library studying from open to close. If the library wasn’t open, Martha studied in her car. “I had to be away from the house. I couldn’t study if it wasn’t quiet.” During the week Martha managed all the cooking and cleaning for her family and got in an additional three to four hours of studying after everyone had gone to bed.
On the day of this interview Martha was waiting for her oldest child, Roman, to finish the math portion of his college entrance exam. “It was really hard on him and his sisters for me to spend so much time studying. They’d asked me all the time, when I’d be done. They missed me, but I know they’re proud of me”.
Roman learned a lot from his mother about hard work and the importance of applying himself to his schooling. This June, just two weeks after Martha graduated with her Associates Degree in Nursing, Roman graduated from high school in the top tenth percentile. He and his mother attended each other’s graduations, cheering each other across the stage. Martha nearly bursts with pride as she recounts her son’s words, “At his graduation he told me ‘I promise I’m going to get a degree, and I’m going to do it for you!’”

ALUMNI CONNECTION Spring 2008
The Alumni have kept busy over the last couple of months. President Chris Nix’s project E-Pals, an email based mentoring program matching soon-to-be-graduates with Alumni working in the same career field, wrapped up its first semester in May. Over the summer Chris will work on revamping the program to make it run a little smoother; and then will be recruiting a second group of participants and graduates to be paired up for the fall semester. Anyone interested in being a mentor or a mentee please contact Chris Nix.
In April, the Alumni Treasurer stepped down to attend to personal matters. The officer seat will remain unfilled until the annual elections held in September. In the meantime plans for the Sponsor-a-Scholar fundraising drive have been finalized. The Alumni will be sending out a mailer similar to last year’s drive. Last year the Sponsor-a-Scholar drive raised over thirteen hundred dollars; thank you again to everyone who contributed. We’re expecting to get an even better response this year. For more information on Sponsor-a-Scholar, please visit the Alumni website.
Also in April the Alumni had their second networking Happy Hour of the year at Austin 300. We had a good turnout and everyone had a fantastic time. The North Austin location proved to be a popular choice. Pictures from past happy hours have been uploaded to the Alumni website. The next Alumni Happy Hour is scheduled for August. Evites will go out the month before.
In May many of the Alumni officers and members attended Capital IDEA’s Ninth Annual Celebration of Achievements. Alumni Speakers for the event included: Eloina Serna, Felicia Reed, Justin Tigrett, and presenter of the Aurora Alworth Award: President Chris Nix. After the Capital IDEA ceremony, the Alumni hosted an “After Hours Celebration” in the hotel lobby lounge where new and past graduates and staff were able to mingle and relax.
On May 18th, Alumni representatives were invited to speak at the Capital IDEA Stake Holder’s Society Fundraiser benefiting participants from Williamson County. The event was held in Georgetown at the house of Capital IDEA friends Jim and Lavon Mills. President Chris Nix and alumnus Rhonda Carthel shared their stories with the guests, encouraging them to invest in Capital IDEA and support participants from the Williamson County Area.
As a close to another school year, the Alumni had their Second Annual Alumni Reunion BBQ, held on May 26th, Memorial Day. Alumni and their families spent the day swimming, playing games and enjoying the delicious food. The Alumni Association provided hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage, chicken legs, brisket, and ribs. Guests brought side dishes to share. Everyone had a wonderful time and more than enough to eat. Photos from this event are also on the Alumni website under ‘Image Gallery’.
